How Sleeve Gastrectomy Works
The sleeve reduces the size and shape of stomach by creating a “sleeve, the shape of a banana” using a stapling device. The rest of the stomach is removed through your belly button.
The sleeve works by permanently reduces the size of your stomach, which then limits the amount of food that you can eat. Food will still pass normally through your digestive system, allowing vitamins and nutrients from your food to be fully absorbed.
The sleeve procedure involves surgery on your stomach only, it does not involve your intestines. The procedure removes about 2/3 of the stomach, this provides a quicker sense of fullness and decreased in your appetite.
The sleeve both also decreases the production of the hormone, ghrelin, which is makes you feel full and lets you feel satisfied and the physical feeling to stop eating.
